Got advice for me on my new baby?
my mare did it, she had her foal three weeks ago. I am so proud and excited!
We went out one morning to feed and there she was, wobbling around behind mama.
She is a little buckskin with three white socks, a huge white heart shape on her face, a snip on her nose, and a pink bottom lip.
Vet said she is extremely healthy and cute!
What advice can you give me on my first foal I've ever had? She is APHA and AQHA. She nibbles at hay and grass, but I cant see any teeth. Can she eat that already?
First remember that she's going to grow up to be a big horse so no matter how cute she is don't let her do things you wouldn't let her mamma do. You can do fun thing with her that are actually training such as rubbing her all over, start carrying her halter and let her get used to being rubbed all over by it, you, a lead rope anything you can think of.
They will nibble on the mares feed at a very young age and they may take a bite full here and there but she still needs her dam. I usually weaned at anywhere from 5-6 months, but many do earlier or later.
Work on picking up her feet don't hold them for long but a quick pick up will get her ready for the farrier in the future. At three weeks you can put a halter on and off remember never leave a halter on they can get hurt. I like to start them young with a quick on and off and rubbing all over so when the real halter training starts it's kind of old news to them. Is your mare Saddle broke? If so and you have a safe place you can ride with baby trailing along do so it gets the filly used to seeing you up above her so she will be less confused when her first ride happens.
Another good thing to rub her with is a saddle blanket really anything you can think of. Once she's halter broke lead her over tarps, plastic, wood posts anything you can think of all this will get her to be a great trail horse cause nothing will faze her. If possible once halter broke pony her from her dam scratch her ears and her back while above her.
If you can park a trailer where her and her dam can get in to eat grain. I especially like to do this after weaning I will grain them and even hay them in a trailer so they load themselves then you never really have to trailer train them they've done it for you.
Mostly enjoy it is a fun time, but also a very important time because what you do for her now will determine how all her training goes and how she will react to things. I know I listed a lot and I don't mean for you to do everything all at once this is more of an idea for the first year of life and what you can do. She still needs horsey time to run in the pasture with her dam. At this age you don't want to over load her with to much. But something as simple as carrying a lead rope with you when you feed will get her used to seeing it.
