how to brush my old cats fur?
My boy is nearly 16yrs old, he has always been a proud clean cat & always groomed himself.
Suddenly his fur down his back & thighs has gone into peak shapes & is a bit tough. Its not knotted at all, it just wont fall properly, he looks like a punk rocker!
I have seen it on old cats before.
I have tried brushing it this doesn't help, he is half Burmese/persian so usually has medium/short thick soft fur.
Any helpful answers much appreciated
The problem is you're BRUSHING! Brushes should NEVER be used on cats with medium to long coats with thick undercoats. Brushes do little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and pull out and break top coat hairs.
Buy a good quality steel-toothed COMB and comb your cat's coat. You need to do so at least every other day year round to prevent mats. Sad that you haven't done this and now your cat has mats - which can be VERY painful as they twist and tighten and pull at the skin. If you can't work these mats out with the comb then take him to your vet or a groomer experienced with cats and have the mats clipped out.
