Do you believe a horse can be both?
Can a horse have the mental capacity and athletic ability to be competent and excell at
1) Western pleasure
2) Barrel racing (or other speed events)
Some people are going to gasp and say "no way, no how!" but I'm not talking about AQHA Congress here, larger provincial (or state) shows more like. I think that a horse can excell in both personally. One such horse that I know of is a 3rd D Barrel racing saddle winner, and a Hi Point Senior Western Pleasure Horse at many a show. Maybe this horse is the exception, I don't know. So I do know that it can be done, just not on the extreme National/World show circuit (that I know of, perhaps it has been done). So basically what I am wondering is do you think it can be done? Why or why not? Any personal experiences would be nice.
I bet a horse could be both. I mean, really.
Look at the English world- we have it, and it's known as Eventing.
First you ride a Dressage test in a snaffle bit (Unlike full Dressage, we never get to use double bridles or anything more severe than a Boucher, even at the Olympic level) and then you gallop 15+ natural fences on Cross Country, at average speeds ranging from 250 m/m to well over 500 m/m, depending on level. At the regional shows, this is often done on the same day, with only 3 or 5 hours in between.
Finally, on the third day, you have a stadium round, which is best likened to Jumpers.

Cross Country: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIe9K2BiAc8&feature=related (It might not seem very fast, but what they show are only the jumps, and they've started to slow the horses up for these technical fences. Keep in mind, also, that there are easily over 25 of such fences on this course!)

This is all from the 2008 Olympics, but it is important to note that the Olympics is not the highest level of competition in Eventing, difficulty-wise.
So, if English horses can do it, I'm sure a Western horse could too. However, before it could become common to have a horse that could do both, breeding for Western horses would have to change- The horses that are high-level Event horses are usually from bloodlines that have been bred for both movement and jumping ability. Currently, most Western horses are bred for either or- Yet your best bet for success would be to find a horse with both lines. However, right now in many areas the WP judging is messed up severely, and so you might find that such an all-purpose horse will never shuffle slow enough for the judges who have lost sight of WPs origins.
