Moving Equipment And Fish From One Tank To The Other?
I just purchased a 4 foot tank as an upgrade from my 2 foot and I need to know how to change the fish over, if possible I would like to do it as soon as possible as I dont have much space in my room and its a real pain,
the equipment on the 2 foot is 200 lph filter, 60lph filter, heater and air pump, so can i move the heater filter and gravel as well as the water to the new tank along with the fish, will this mean that the tank wont have to cycle?
the fish are 3 platties, 8 neons, 4 rosy barbs, bronze catfish, and a mystery snail, I know a little crowded but I knew I was getting a new tank,
I really dont want an ammonia spike that will kill my fish, so should I let the tank cycle for a few weeks, or preferably do it now,
thanks for the help
Daniel
It's just like moving house and planning is the key to success.
You have enough filtration, you have additional aeration, but is your current heater big enough for the new tank? You need double the gravel you currently have and what additional plants or ornaments will you be adding if any? You are going to need a couple of clean buckets, but is there anything else you can think of, like can you age the additional water you will be adding. It could be standing in bottles right now.
Once you are planned and have all the bits ready to go, then there's no point in delay.
Position the new tank and add the new substrate evenly across the bottom. Your going to put the old stuff on top of it. Add a couple of inches of new water. Fill a bucket from your old tank, catch your fish, stick them in that with a towel over the top and put to one side. Drain your old tank into the other bucket and add the water to the new. Stay clear of the gravel as you don't want the crap only the bacteria. When you are left with a couple of inches, scoop the gravel out using your hands. It's messy, but all you get is gravel and bacteria.
Now switch the filters, heater and pump over, add new plants/furniture, top up to cover the heater with new water and switch on. Everything is planned so you should be inside the hour mark. Let it run for a couple of hours so the water is circulated and at temperature. Bag float you fish as if they were new, but add the water from the bag rather than sling it. Finally top up from what's left in the bucket.
Your fish will not be happy fish, so I wouldn't feed till the following day or switch the lights on.
You shouldn't get a spike, really all you've done is a 50% water change
