Buying a Saddle

A Saddle is the most expensive part of your horse tack. A great deal of what your horse ride is like depends on your saddle, making them not only expensive, but important. Here are some things to remember while you are in the market for a saddle.

First you want to do your research. Research will involve knowing all the brands available, in the price range you are looking for. You should also research types. Research the best place to purchase as well.

Take for example brick and mortar stores. Some people prefer doing their research by shopping in a store where they can physically touch the product. Then when research is done, they buy online to find the best pricing and selection. Other people will do the opposite. These people will research online, find what they want, and then go to a local store for final purchase. However, there are always those who live far away from supply stores. For these consumers, the internet is their only mode for researching and purchasing.

Because saddles are so expensive, they are also an investment: you will get what you pay for. Typically the more expensive brands will last longer and will hold their value longer. If you've owned a high quality saddle before, you may have experienced reselling your saddle after it's served your purposes and you are ready for a new or newer saddle.

But what about purchasing a used saddle in the first place? If you choose to purchase a used saddle, your research will need to include a thorough inspection before buying. A used saddle's leather, saddletree, and exterior should be examined before you buy. All western wear and horse tack should be high quality if you want it to last for the long haul.

Retailers are going to naturally do most of the inspection work in testing the wear and tear of a used saddle, thus, making it easier for you to buy. A retailer will scrutinize used merchandise for pricing. They should also know what kind of shape a saddle is in.

But with this benefit comes the down side: a resell shop has to make a profit so they will add in a price markup. This mark up that you pay as the consumer may be worth the money. Take for instance if you bought directly from a saddle owner. In this case, you would have to do all saddle inspections yourself. Missing any big blemishes or foundational problems, would end up costing you more money in the end.

Finally, now that you've researched and selected your saddle, you can add finishing touches to your horse tack. Saddle accessories are available to complement your western wear and to complete your entire outfit. This is an important step if showing your individuality is important. Saddle accessories can even give you and your horse a little extra flair that can go a long way in building a confident, happy riding team.
