Cycling: time trial bikes, road racing bikes...? do i really need them all for each purposes?

I noticed that long races and time trial races have different kinds of cycling bikes... do i REALLY need them for specific purposes? i mean, im definitly not a pro or anything but i dont wanna look like a dumbass when i go to a competition

I race, and I have both a road racing bike and a time trial bike. My road bike is my nice/expensive bike as I use it for most all of my racing and training. My time trial bike is nice, but I spent about 1/3 on it of what I spent on my road bike. I like time trials and enjoy the style of riding/race so invested in one. I have just found that I do well in time trials and that is where I make up the most time on other riders in stage races, so that's why I have one. The time trial bike is much faster than my road bike, due mainly to the more aerodynamic position and I would bet it makes me 30-60 seconds faster over a 10k course than my normal road bike. It is common for some people not to have a TT bike for races, and they just ride a normal road bike. People won't think you are an idiot for NOT riding a TT bike, but yes, the more serious riders do have both types of bikes.
