How much am i suppose to feed my 4 inch arowana? I just got him yesterday he eats 4 pellets and 1 shrimp a day
So heres the details. The first time a I saw a silver arowana I was amazed at its beauty and the elegance of its swiming at an aquarium store. Right now I have a 55 gallon tank with him and a 1 and a half inch flowerhorn. They get along great, never fight or push eachother...yet. I will upgrade the arowana with a 180-225 gallon tank later, when he gets 8 inches or starts to get aggressive with the flower horn or vice-versa. Well its my junior year in highschool so that means im broke all the time with the occassional job and allowance from my dad, but I am saving up for that expensive tank. So i ran out of space in my question box but i was wondering what is the typical diet a week for his size and when he gets bigger 8 inches? what can i feed him? how much? how often? will he get big if i feed him alot or will that just result in more waste for me to clean up? i heard theyre appetite drops wayy down when they get bigger thank god, im really dedicated in taking care of this guy, help!
Typical diets for Arowana are SURFACE foods, NOT feeder fish and advice for feeders is piss poor. You're already feeding your Arowana correctly now as it is. Pellets are a decent choice and helps to keep the Arowana focused on the surface as you want him to. Foods such as feeder fish or foods that sink will start him looking downward and droop eye will ensue. Feeders additionally very high in protein cause the eye muscles to grow in place facing down as well. An Arowana would not pursue other fish unless it's either taught to do so by it's owner, or if in the wild, no other food source is present.
Food is a tricky thing with Arowana. They are very picky eaters. I still cannot get my Jardini to take crickets yet, but he goes well after bloodworms. Jardini are a better choice for aquariums as they tend to get closer to Asian Arowana sizes where the South Americans get closer to four feet at final adult sizes. For now, stick with your pellets, and krill. You can also try the cubes. I have had success getting my South Americans when I kept them eating bloodworm and brine shrimp cubes. Mealworms are another good choice as they will float. Earthworms are ok but you also have to dangle them on the surface to get the Arowana's attention. You do not want your Arowana to get in the habit of eating foods on the bottom.
Feeders additionally are a poor choice as you are just asking for an unwanted pathogen to get in your tank if they aren't tank raised. Feeders are best if tank raised and given ONLY to predator type fish. Arowana are NOT true predators.
IF you paid 100 for a South American, you way overpaid.
