Is a back cinch necessary on a western saddle that comes with one?
HI, don't laugh, I have just bought my first western saddle after ridding English all of my life. it is a nice reiner that I felt comfortable in and fits the horse that I am planning to ride well. it came with the straps for a back cinch, but not the cinch itself. how important is it, can I safely just take the straps off and store them? also how would the back cinch be on my just started 2 going on 3 year old? is it going to cause problems?
Those two straps in the back are called "Flank Billets" and no you don't need a back cinch unless you're ponying youngsters, roping, etc. Their purpose when attached to a flank cinch is to keep the back of the saddle from rising too high when there is weight applied to the horn, such as roping, etc.
