What kind of bit would i use?
I have an older mare, she listens well most of the time and responds easy with the bit. In her western bridle i have a curb bit. not a high one. in her english bridle i have a snaffle. in the snaffle she sometimes doesn't listen as well, and i have to keep "brake checking" her. what kind of bit would bite a bit more, but not be too mean. also, whats a good bit for sport. is there an all around bit that is good for western pleasure riding, but can be used if i ran barrels. (for fun, not competition)this sounds a bit confusing, but its hard to say what im thinking. hope you get it.
If you train your horse right, you can ride it in anything, anywhere. I ride my 13 year old Anglo-Arabian in a bitless bridle, on the loose rein as well as English dressage, across trails, at all speeds, including a gallop. There should never be force, the essence of training is the horse learns to respond to cues. I'm sure you've seen great riders giving cues by means of a string around the horse's neck. It's all about teamwork. In a snaffle bit, if you are riding English, a horse will often react to hands that are not steady, or will just try and pull to escape contact. It is up to you as the rider to teach your horse to stay in a good frame and to listen to you. The bit is a tool, but without a good workman, no tool will work.
