Sport Medicine Boots or Polos?
What is your protection of choice and why? SMB (Classic Equine, Professionals Choice, Legacy, etc.) or Polo Wraps? To me it seems like the polos hug the leg more giving more support, and the smb's seem to get a lot of sand in them I know many who have the same problem, and no it's not because of sizing or incorrect fitting..........overall just curious of others preferance
Polos are basically of cosmetic value, and not much else. They offer 1% in the way of support, at best, which means they do nothing in the way of offering support.. These things have been well researched in legitimate scientific studies and proven. The veterinary community has recommended SMBs with fetlock support as the best choice for overall protection from concussive injuries. Even they don't offer any significant protection from ligament and tendon sprains and strains. Only conditioning can prevent those injuries. But they offer superior protection from injuries sustained by blunt force, and do help to dissipate some of the shock force brought up through the hooves. When they are properly fitted, they also prevent debris from getting under them.
Any boot should be checked for debris regularly, and removed immediately after a workout since tendons become overheated when boots are worn. When the core temperature in a tendon reaches a critical level, the tissue cells begin to die off, doing serious damage.
It's best to only use boots when absolutely necessary, such as in competitions, and to condition the horse without them whenever possible. Polos are virtually worthless as far as function, and since it requires expertise to wrap them correctly, they aren't the best choice.
Anyway, these are the findings of extensive research and pretty much indisputable, so while opinions may vary, the scientific research doesn't lie.
sparrow.....the research I refer to is not product sponsored research. It is conducted by veterinary medical scientists who have no affiliation with products. I also follow human research in sports medicine and exercise physiology, which is also conducted by the scientific community and not sponsored by companies selling products. I don't quote research that is product sponsored, and I warn others to ignore their claims of "research" findings. I've personally worked pretty extensively with FDA protocols and in legitimate medical research, so I do know the difference between valid scientific studies and meaningless, uncontrolled, non-validated data presented to sell products. I assure you that the research I reference is valid, scientific research.
Polo wraps offer no more than about 1% support, which is useless in prevention of tendon or ligament stress, tears, or other traumatic injury. That really is a well established fact.
