Will My Horse Be Cold?
I ride 4 times a week either schooling or hacking. Either way we work hard.
My horse will be getting a full clip
My rugs:
Fleece Show Rug
Heavy newmarket rug
Lightweight turnout
Heavyweight turnout
Heavyweight stable
Under rug
None of the rugs have necks, and over the next month or two, my horse will be living out 24/7.
At the moment, the weather is about 16c and at night it can fall to about 10c. When she is clipped, because none of her rugs have necks, will she be ok?
Also, which rugs should I use for different weather. - what rugs should I use when she is clipped?
Don't accuse me of being cruel
I only use a neck cover on one of my horses but that's to preserve his mane in the winter weather (he's a reiner so his mane goes passed his shoulder and I want it to stay that way haha). Unless your horse is sensitive to the cold, having a her neck clipped shouldn't bother her too badly. Worst case scenario, you'll have to get her a hood or neck cover.
As for which blankets to use when, horses prefer temperature between fifty and forty degrees (F) so it is when the temperature begins to approach freezing is when we need step in. For just above freezing, I like to use a midweight turnout/blanket. Since one isn't on your list, I'd substitute the under rug under the lightweight turnout. Once the temp is just under freezing, I'd pull out the heavyweight turnout (since she'll be outside all of the time). When is gets well below freezing, put the heavyweight blanket under the heavyweight turnout.
