what do YOU do??
how many different methods are there to collect your horse??
I was reading on Y! answers and someone said too use any method you liked when training a green horse to collect at the trot..... well i was just wondering how many kinds of methods are there?
what aids do you use to make make your horse collect himself?
in western I just barely pulled the reins back and up.. up so she wouldnt think i was wanting her to stop.. and if my mare didn't respond to the hand i would give her some leg and then she'd pull under herself and she would collect for me.. then of course to reward her i softend my hand! =) but she was an old dead broke horse lol
silly question i know but i'm just wondering if any one did anything different? or what you did to collect your horse?
i have a green horse i'm trying to teach to collect himself.. he doesnt fight the bit, but i don't think he understand i want him to use his hindquarters...he just slooows down haha..oh well he's getting it though =)
Every horse is differant. So not all horses will be able to collect properly and some horses have natural collection and little to no help. When a horse needs help to collect themselves I like to go back and forth betwen draw reins and a running martingale, and then nothing at all and back to draw reins. when riding with no aids make sure your hands are steady and that you pull to you hips other wise you will be teaching a problem not correcting one.
My personal favorite is the draw reins. set the bottom rein just above the level you want your horses head ( do not go to much to quick). While walking calmly use a seesaw motion gently till your horse gives slightly to the pressure when the horse gives you give or quit nagging and reward them. when their head comes up return to nagging gently. Becareful not to irritate your horse too much this can cause a problem you have to read you horses thoughts. Use the sesaw motion when not using the draw reins but understand the feeling is a little bit differant but the two of you can get the hang of this if you are patient with each other.
** too much of a good thing is VERY bad.
** Remember to really help your horse know when they do something right.
** ALWAYS end on a happy note by doing something your horse can do right and do easily so that you can build their confidance.
** A horse should be clamer and more relaxed at the end of the ride then the start.
Happy Training!!!
