Well its actually not a bit... some type of hackamore..bitless bridle..halter with reins?! I'm clueless...lol.
It is called a Braided Rawhide Bosal hackamore or jaquima which is used prior to bitting a young horse. The bosal on this horse is attached to a double ear headstall. The reins are rope, and should be wrapped on the weighted heel knot at the chin of the bosal so that the cheeks of the bosal touch the lower jaw when the bosal is at a 90 degree angle to the bridge of the nose. Usually a colt is started in a heavier, stiffer bosal and then gradually trained to a lighter more flexible one as he becomes more responsive. When the colt is responding well in a lighter bosal, snaffle bit training begins, and the bosal may be alternated with the snaffle bit as the colt adapts, until he is safe to ride in the snaffle bit alone. If the colt begins to resist the bit, he goes back to the bosal for a tune up, so it is a process that can vary depending on the colt's responses. The next level in training is performed in the snaffle bit, and the horse is eventually finished to neck rein in a curb bit. Some horses are kept in a bosal permanently if they aren't going to be shown. Only young horses are allowed to be shown in a bosal.
