Horse rugs come in many different shapes, fabrics, weights and sizes, all designed for a different use. Some are light, some are heavy, some are for when a horse is working, others for when it is rested, some for indoor, some for outdoors. Differences in fabrics, heaviness, thickness, shape and other factors are determined by the needs of the horse in certain conditions.
Although most horse rugs are meant to be worn when a horse is at rest, there are several which may be used when the horse is being ridden or worked. Saddle blankets prevent chafing from a saddle and provide some heat. A longer quarter sheet which extends to the horse's rump provides even more warmth if needed.
There are numerous horse rugs designed primarily for outdoor usage. The specific threats to the horse such as cold, flies, rain or dirt determines the type of rug which should be chosen.
The summer blanket is a most lightweight of the outdoor horse rugs and keeps a horse clean and pest-free during the warmer months.
The slightly heavier, but still relatively light, turnout blanket is suitable for a pastured horse during the spring and early autumn, offering a little protection against the slightly cooler evenings and mornings. Some are waterproof or water resistant, if needed. They can also be used throughout the summer months as fly protection.
Thicker and denser turnout rugs provide protection and warmth for horses pastured in cold weather. Usually made of breathable waterproof fabrics, some have different pieces so they can be altered to suit the conditions at the time. There is also a heavy, thick canvas rug called the New Zealand rug. This is waxed for shower protection and can be re-waxed.
Where flies and pests are the main problem for a horse, specially designed fly sheets can provide extra protection. These cover more of the horse's body and often come with a hood or mask which also covers the head and neck area.
When a horse is stabled indoors, various stable rugs are available. A light stable rug protects from flies, pests and knocks in summer months, while a heavyweight stable rug provides warmth and protection during colder months.
Some rugs have a very specific use, whereas some are good for more general usage. A cooler rug or mantle is designed to be draped over a horse so that it cools less quickly after bathing or riding / working when the horse is sweating. A fleece rug, on the other hand, is a great general purpose rug which can be used as a travel rug, a cooler, a light stable blanket or for extra warmth under a turnout rug or blanket.
When being transported, horses are liable to slight knocks and bumps and may be bother by flies, pests, dust and dirt. A specifically designed travel rug may be used, although sometimes a fleece rug, a cooler or a light blanket may substitute.
A horse owner should ensure they have all the different rugs they need to protect their horse in different circumstances and conditions, maintaining a healthy, safe and happy horse.
Horse rugs can accomplish several different functions such as warmth, coat protection and decoration. Horse wear is the best way to have an attractive and functional garment for your horse.
