Rubber floor matting for better drainage? - please tell me what you think...?

Ok, so Im doing research into rubber floor matting, which I hope to get if our budget allows. But whilst researching, I found this information

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/horsecare/1370/60081.html

and saw the picture with the horse with no bedding added whatsoever. Is that really possible? And ok for the horse? Does anyone here use matting without bedding?

So what is the use of the rubber mats when it comes to urine? I constantly see the words 'for better drainage' added with the rubber matting designs, so does the urine simply pass through underneath the mats? Is that the idea?

If anyone here uses mats please give me your thoughts and views on it and is it really worth it and cost effective?
Thanks

I have rubber mats over a concrete base. The urine goes between the mats and drains out at the front of the stables ( and across the yard yuk) if I don't use bedding and also sometimes if I do - depends on how much the horse pees really. You have to lift the mats periodically to clean underneath them anyway ( hose out etc)
Unbedded mats get nasty -= I've only ever done one horse with mats and no shavings and that was a boxwalking eventer where I used to work it was so gross it needed hosing everyday but with bedding it was nearly as bad to be honest. Poo trod down on matting and then peed on gets slippery so personally I'd prefer a sprinkle of shavings across the mats ( and any stable without banks just looks wrong ! )
