English girth: best type?
I've got to get a new english girth. The one I used on my arabs is barely reaching on the last hole on the Andalusians, TBs, and clydesdales I'm riding these days, so I want to know what type you guys think is best. I need one with at least one D ring in the center for the brest plate to attach to, and I'd prefer one with the elastic at least on one side.
Right now I really like the looks of the solid rounded leather ones with the belly guard. The one I have now is just a basic nylon one that came with the Saddle, and it hasn't given me any trouble (outside of it's length), but I don't like how it rolls up under the horse's forelegs, I'm always afraid it's going to cause sores. I'd like to keep it under $100, but I'm all up for getting a used girth. I just want to know what traits you guys like or dislike on each type. Oh, and I'd love to hear your reasons, just so I can learn more.
You don't need a belly guard unless you are jumping and your horse wears studded shoes. If you just want one, that's okay, but you don't need it.
I like to get a contoured girth to let the horse move his forelegs more freely. And I like elastic in the girth so it has some give. Also, since my horse is sensitive, I like either a girth with fleece on it or a fleece cover.
