How can I break in a new leather bridle? - It's really stiff.?
It's a peice of crap/on sale/$20 bridle. (Which doesn't help my cause. Lol) Anyway, it's really stiff and looks a bit funny on my horse as it has not really molded into 'horse shape' yet. Any ideas how I can soften the leather? (I'm thinking I should have just spent the extra money and got a nice one). But, this is good for now... It'll look okay when it's broken in.
Because I ride english. I wouldn't ride in a nylon bridle.
I'm not overly concerned with it being stiff. I know it will soften up, I just wanted some suggestions to soften it up faster.
Same thing for stiff bridle as a new pair of boots. Just because it's 'new' doesn't mean it hasn't dried out. (ppl just don't think about 'shelf life' and leather in the same reference)
Put it in a bucket of water, the whole thing, and watch it bubble like a little alka-seltzer. When it stops bubbling, take it out, wipe off excess water, put it on your horse and go for a good ride.
If it's not dry when you get back, good, go over it liberally with LEXOL. DO NOT FORCE dry leather. It will break the top grain and it can't be fixed. The top grain is the strength and stability of the leather.
