More Made Draft Horse Info Below

my horse wont trot?
my horse (a morgan draft cross) is great with mostly every and anything besides being ridden in a group. she just is very sensitive and gets set off easily. last weekend my trainer made me take off her flash becuase i cant show in it and she wanted me to ride with out it and winnie was horriable! now i cant use the flash and she goes around head in the clouds pacing or cantering but not trotting she will eventually trot after we have galloped (yes full blown gallop) a few times around but i dont want to have to do that EVERY time i ride (i have to do this according to my trainer as she acts up now with or without other horses in the ring with her). shes a jumper so shes high strungas it is but has any one got any tips for slowing down and calming down? also i dont get nervous when she does this and im not over mounted on her, it just gets annoying when your showing and it looks as though you can barely control your horse!
Lounging before you ride is a very good idea. It takes some of the extra energy out of them, you should lounge her untill she starts to calm down, before getting on her.
It also sounds like she needs some lessons in collection and dropping her head as well. After you have finished lounging,
start asking her to give to the bit on the ground. Stand on one side of her and take the slack out of the rein untill you have made contact with her mouth. Then wait for her to bend her head and release the pressure from her mouth, if she moves around thats okay just stay with her and wait for her to give. If she doesn't respond add more pressure to her mouth and then wait for her to give. As soon she gives let go of the rein and let her take her head back then ask again. Get three or four gives on one side then go to the next and do the same. Then when you get on to ride do the same thing as you did on the ground. This exercise will help her to become soft with the bit and will make your collection work a whole lot easier for you, and her she will learn it a lot faster.
Another good exercise is the 'Circle S' exercise. Start at the walk and then the trot. Start by asking her to walk in a circle besure to take the slack out of only one rein. Hold the rein untill she both give to the bit and steps in the direction that her nose is pointed, once she has done this release the rein and let her walk out of it. Again if she doesn't give take more slack out of the rein and wait again. Remember to do this on both sides, and once she is good at the walk do it at the trot.
This exercise will help her to be soft while moving and will help her to follow her nose better as well.
The next exercise is collection, do not try to do this unless she is doing well with the above exercises remember to take you time there should be no rush for her to learn these exercises. You can start this exercise at the walk, by first picking up on one rein, so that she will be walking in a circle. Then take the slack out of the outside rein wait for her to drop her head and give to the bit, like you asked her to do in the earlier exercises. Once she respondes release the outside rein then ask her to do it again, get three or four gives on one side then go to the other. Keep at this untill she respondes each time you ask at the walk and trot.
Then the next step is do equel amounts of pressure on both reins, wait for her to give and then release the pressure (Be sure to give her very big releases, give her back all of the rein if will work best if you just drop your reins, also a snaffle bit is the best bit for these exercises.) After she is giving to pressure on both reins each time you ask you can start holding the pressure for longer and longer periods of times. You will feel her bump the on the bit looking for the release just hold her through two or three bumps then release when there is no pressure on the reins. Then continue to do that untill she holds her head in that position nicely without bumping on the bit.
Now for her paceing and cantering. Try asking her to trot keep you reins loose don't try to control her speed. In stead when she starts going faster then what you want her to, do a one rein stop. You can do this by takeing all of the slack out of one rein and bend her head around to your leg this should make her stop her feet. Once she is stopped ask her to trot again, if she speeds up do the one rein stop again, but make sure that you stop her and praise her when she does trot even if it is for a few strides. She will eventually get tired of spinning circles and will begin to go at your speed and not hers.
I hope this helps, e-mail me and let me know how things are going for you.
