Has anyone tried riding in a bareback pad?
I'm toying with getting a bareback pad for my mare. She's an appaloosa and I got her a western bridle a few years back, which she looks stunning in. I can't afford a western Saddle, so thought about getting a bareback pad.
I've seen two types - the "non-slip" ones with neoprene underneath, or the standard ones with sheepskin underneath, which look much nicer. Do the standard ones slip? I want one with stirrups, even though I know you can't mount or rely on them too much, so the Best Friend ones are out. Also, am I right in thinking I can attach a western breastplate to the big rings that the stirrups and girth attach onto?
Thanks!
I have used both types (standard and neoprene kind) and I think I prefer the neoprene.
I would DEFINETELY use a breastplate any and every time you use a bareback pad. Since the pad has no tree like a saddle does, it could easily slip backwards and you'd have one seriously freaked out horse on your hands if it ended up with the pad around its haunches. Not sure if a Western breastplate would work or not...I'd be concerned with it being heavy and pulling on the pad. You can buy fleece and nylon breastcollars very inexpensively, and that would work just as well.
Do not ever use a bareback pad with stirrups, and if you buy one that has them, remove them. They are definetely not safe or useful under any circumstances.
You might try eBay or checking the local newspaper for good deals on used Western saddles, after you have been saving up for a while and if you're still interested in having one. Also see if your local 4H does a tack swap event each year...I have gotten GREAT deals on tack and equipment there. Good luck!
