Upper Back strengthening work outs for my horse?
My horse is 4 now and we do a ton of trail and running around. I've noticed his muscles are changeing on his body and he's not as even as I would like. his withers are becoming more prominant and there's less muscle, or something near the back bone, so you can see it easier. I want to add more muscle up there, so I've been making him do a slow jog forever with his head tucked in. and now were slowly working on the lope with head tucked. he doesn't put his head all the way down like a western pony is supposed to, but more englishy. I want to know if there's more that I can do to work those upper back muscles, and maybe if you know how to get his head down farther like I see at big western horseshows..... I have alot of control, I just need to know how...
our latest riding vid, but we've still improved alot since I made that.
he has almost got it. you need to ask him to carry his head a bit lower and not tucked but his head should be parallel with his withers. he is a cutie and you have done a good job. I would also try trot or jogging some poles and cavaleties so he really has to use his hindend. When he is a correct frame. you will feel his back rise adn he will become very light on your hands and round. If done correctly you should notice a BIG difference. He wont be able to hold the frame for long because he doesnt have that back muscle. The frame will really help build up his topline (back) and his hindquarters. I would ask to take a lesson that way someone can tell you the best way to get your horse on the bit. Everyone does it differently.
I do it this way:
You drive your horse forward into the bit. I either do half halts or I interchange jigging the reins and drive them forward till I feel them round out and the back rise...then I release, my release depends on how much of a give the give me a small release for a small give a big release for a big one. Remember you ride your horse into the bit. Which means forward action.
Good luck!
I'm sure there is some one here to explain it better than me. I am good at showing.
