I'm loosing my niceness with my horse.?
ok so I have a 3 year old gelding. Aqha registered. He's already been to his first show and we just did showmanship and walk trot and he did very good for his first show. Well i've been wanting to start loping him. But he will not let me. This horse will not lope for me. he does it on the lounge line but not under Saddle. What he does is trots really fast and zig zags everywhere. these zig zags become violent and it's a job to stay in the saddle. Why is he doing this? what do I do?
We show in/ will be showing in:
halter
showmanship
walk trot
western pleasure
horsemanship
trail
hunter under saddle
english pleasure
and english equation.
we do both and I ride in 2 different saddles and they both fit him ok. This isnt the first horse I've trained. I just havent had this problem yet. I use the same commands I do when I lunge him except I use my spur too when I ride him.
and I do start to get aggressive with him but then he starts crowhoppin.
This is totally normal and common so try to be patient and persistent with him. If you keep trotting faster and faster, eventually he's going to break into a lope. When he does, then slow him down to a walk, so he knows that's what you want him to do. at this point, its not important to be able to steer, just to get him to lope. some horses really get to thinking that they can't do it, its just too much. you have to show him that he can do it.
Make sure your moving your leg slowly, so as not to scare him. its not really necessary to be firm at this point, since your teaching him. if he already knew how to do it, that would be a different story. Slowly (Slowly!) Squeeze him at a trot, (and you may go faster and faster and zig zag a bit) until he starts loping. then slow him down to a walk and walk him around on a loose rein and let him think. do all of this very slow and deliberate so he can't really miss what your trying to tell him. Anyway do this exercise 10 times.
After he gets that down, then start working on getting the canter sooner and sooner from a trot. the idea is to keep him light and responsive. when you start loping for quite a ways, make sure you keep the gas on, but stay relaxed.
The reason he zig zags is hes trying to find his balance.
What i would do is alot of haunches in on your trot circles. start your lesson off with alot (until he is very responsive to your outside leg) of these. that will help him develop his balance for the lope.
