I am having a problem with my horse who is just getting used to a snaffle chomping on the bit?
We had it set in her mouth so there were just two wrinkles. I just watched a video on you tube that said there should just barely be a wrinkle because you want the horse to pick up on the bit not the other way around. Would having the bit too high make her chomp on the bit or if the bit was too narrow would that make her chomp? Thanks so much.
the bit should be in the mouth with one small wrinkle. check that the bit is not sitting on the molars, and is the right size. each horse prefers a different bit. if the bit is too high up, as well as causing pain to the horses mouth, you will have no control. this is becuase the bit will be resting on the molars. to low and the bit will be resting on its teeth. so once in, lift up the lips and check to see where the bit is located.
it should be:
>One wrinkle
>not on the molars
>not too far down
also, if she still chomps, and you know it is in the correct position, try making the bit taste nice, such as putting molasses on it or buying an apple flaver bit. another good flavoring type is a bit with copper inserts. too much cooper is distasteful, the only like a tiny bit.
