best type of Saddle for long distance riding?
we are planning a long distance ride along the bicenteniall national trail in 6-12 months time. traveling over 1500km. I've only ever riden in general purpose saddles and dressage saddles. Would a western saddle be more comfortable and practicle for an endurance ride like this? What would be the best saddle for this purpose?
That's what endurance saddles are for.
There are english style endurance saddles, and also more western, you should try them both out, and see what you like more. They will be much lighter than your average saddle, which is really a must, the less weight the better. Especially when you're sore, and don't feel like lugging around a thirty+ pound western saddle.
I personally use Tucker saddles, and a lot of their testimonials are from people who have used them for trips like that. I think that they're the obvious choice, what with their gel seats and all. Plus, when you put them on a smooth gaited horse, you can sit in the saddle all day, and not walk funny at the end of it.
