Horse Question!! Please Read!?
okay I have a horse that i love veryyy much and when we got him i rode him and he was just perfect.. we bought him that day.. but when we got home like 1 week later we put a saddle on him and he bucked me off.. i've been afraid that he will buck me off again.. and now he's acting really ancy and he gets spooked SO easily.
*How can I get him back in a Sweet Mood?*
*How Can I stop him from trying to Bite?*
http://s837.photobucket.com/albums/zz294/cowgirlkarli/?action=view¤t=July52009006.jpg ---I know I look weird.
This was before he started getting spooked out.. he was so nice and sweet.
Please Help! I would really appreciate it!
Also I would love to get him to be nice and calm again so I can ride him on the trails back in our woods.. I have a saddle and bridle and blanket. Is there anything else I need to be prepared for trail riding?
There are numerous possible reasons why he's acting this way. First--and I hope this isn't the case--they could have drugged him or otherwise forced him to behave (either drugs, lunging him til he was exhausted before you got there, etc.) before you tried him. When you took away that, he showed his "true" behavior (antsy, bucking).
He may just be having trouble adjusting to a new place or a new routine. Stick with it and he'll get over this.
He may also be taking advantage of you. He might have bucked the first time for any reason--spooking, just because, he was fresh, etc.--and then realized that it meant he was done working, so now he's going to keep doing it.
My first suggestion is for you to take a few lessons on him. Lessons are not only for complete beginners or for people who are showing. A trainer can help you identify the problem and then solve it, as well as give you some methods of controlling his behavior so you can safely ride him. I would also put him in a regular routine. You said that he bucked you off a week after you bought him--does that mean you rode him for a week before this happened, or was this incident during your first ride? If it's the latter, that means he had a week off--so he was probably very fresh. Some horses are fine being ridden after a lot of time off, but others aren't. This is especially true if the horse is confined to a stall and doesn't get a lot of time outside. Start riding the horse daily, or at least every other day. If he's very fresh (or if you do miss a few days), lunge him before you ride him to help take the edge off--let him get his unruliness out before you get on him. Turning him out right before you ride could also help. When you do get on him, warm him up in an enclosed area--a roundpen, arena, small paddock, etc. Don't hit the trails until he's listening well in the enclosed area. Do a ton of transitions to make him listen. Demand that he respond when you ask, not when he feels like it. If he has a hard mouth or is difficult to stop, do a lot of transitions to a halt until he's stopping when you say "whoa" (or whatever cue you use). Do some flexion exercises to loosen him up and make him easier to turn and control. He needs to learn to respect you. If he ever decides to act stupid, either ride him through it or, if you can't stay on him, lunge him until he's wishing he never thought about being bad. Then make him do it again. Do not let him get away with the behavior, but identify the cause and try to remove it.
If you haven't been riding him (because of his issues) then you're making it worse because the more time he has off, the worse he'll act. He needs to be put back in a regular routine ASAP and made to behave (and disciplined if he doesn't). A good trainer can help you sort him out and make him a safe trail horse. When you do venture out on the trails, do your regular warm-up first and make sure he's at the top of his game. Wear a helmet and go with a buddy on a calm horse who will be a good influence on your horse and who can help you if you need it.
Anytime he bites, smack him. Biting is dangerous and unacceptable. If you ignore it, it won't go away--it'll only get worse. Smacking a horse is not abusing a horse as long as there is a reason for it--and biting is a very good reason for it.
