Horse that sits when ridden?
My friends horse star sits when you go to saddle her and when you are riding her. The last time we went on a trail ride star would not go so my friend hit her with the crop and that usually gets her going again. However this time, she reared up and got loose. My friend's mom got on her at that point but the horse still acted up. It seems to get really bad when she comes into season. I think it might be a physical problem. She was bred and born at my friends house, and my friend wants to breed her-she is an arabian. Will this sitting down thing be inherited to her foal. Is it a good idea to breed her? She was sent out to training when she was younger to be broke. Stars brother is out to training right now. My friend wants to ride him when he comes back, but I am not sure she would be able to handle him, if she cannot handle star. Are there any suggestions?
Hi! As a horse owner and trainer for over 25 years, this is not inherited, it is a learned behavior. And a very annoying one. The most common reason for her to sit is the saddle girth is too tight, the saddle pinches her spine or the rider is over weight and hits her on the back when they mount. The other reason is a too tight bit or the reins pulling her head in. This behavior is almost always because the horse is uncomfortable and in pain. The rearing up was her protest that she has had it. Talk to you Vet and have him examine her spine and hind quarters and make sure her shoes are the right pitch. Check her for any swelling or soreness. The go over the saddle carefully to see how it sits on her back, the fit of the girth and if you pull her front legs after cinching to make sure the skin is not pinched. She is trying to tell you something and you are not listening. She is less tolerate in season, that makes it common problem, not situational. Now is the time to be a detective and see if you can find the problem. The next time you could get thrown and hurt badly. It has happened. Arabs by nature can be a little flighty, but this is something else. I would bet on it. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.
