Hunt saddle vs. all purpose?
I'm getting an English saddle soon, but I'm not sure which kind to buy.
I'm going to be doing flatwork and trail riding, jumping sometimes. I don't like all purpose saddles as well, but would they be better for whet I'm trying to do? I read somewhere that all purpose saddles aren't the best for your horse's back because they try to be every type of saddle at once, so really, they aren't either and don't work very well for anything. The woman from the tack shop recommended a hunt saddle, but my friend from the barn thinks that it would be better if I got an all purpose (but she doesn't really know as much as she pretends she does).
Since you do not specialize, an All Purpose Saddle would probably be the best for you. Any saddle that properly fits will distribute your weight over the horse's back and should not cause him any pain.
It is true that all purpose saddles are not ideal for all activities, but they are pretty good for most activities. An AP saddle is not going to have as deep a seat or long flaps like a dressage saddle, so if you dressage in it, it's not ideal. Nor does an AP have as short of flaps or shallow seat as a close contact. So, if you jump, it's still not ideal. BUT if you both dressage and jump and you can only afford/want one saddle, an AP will work fairly well for almost anything. It is a compromise.
