How do I get my horse 'on the bit'?
My horse and I are just beginning to go into some shows together (even though ive had him for 2 years) mainly in novice walk-trot dressage/showing etc and even though its not something for me to really take seriously (shows on the yard etc) an intructor mused that we'd do so much better on the bit. I know what it is and have wanted to do it for ages but dont know the rein movements
thanks!
I love it when this question gets asked.
First you must forget that it is a rein aid, or something to do with the reins and the head. This is a seat and leg question or cue.
Your horse must be going freely forward for starters and be in front of the leg. He should be tracking up and using his hind end.
Look at the German training pyramid, rhythm and relaxation are at the very bottom the first thing you must accomplish. There is a difference between calm and relaxed. Relaxation means that he is loose in every muscle of his body, that he holds no stiffness and that he when working stretches down and over his topline. A free walk is a perfect example of this. (that is the idea behind free walk, and stretchy trot circles to show your horse is properly trained and is loose and relaxed) Once you have this you move on to things like suppleness, straightness and balance.
This is where people begin to think it is a rein aid that gets the horse round and on the bit. When in reality you are to hold light contact on the reins and push your horse with your legs more or less into the bridle.
Of course if there are errors in his training this is when they become evident, as he will think that the pressure of the reins is a stopping or slowing aid, when it is not. (the reins are used more for lateral, and bending and the legs and seat are your stop and go) If he doesn’t understand what the pressure means take him back to halt and teach him to give to pressure by holding pressure until he flexes at the poll and drops his head (release immediately for the release is the most important part in his training) This make take a while depending on your horse. Don’t let him get out of it, keep your leg on and if he tries to back up think of curling your pelvis under you (its a stop aid) and keep at it till he gives. Try it at walk and trot.
This is where the whole see-sawing thing come into play. people see the giving and releasing to ask a horse to put his head down and have turned it into this mad wiggle and pull of the reins called see-sawing. Just increase contact then release and that when your horse is trained properly will be the cue to get him on the bit.
I hope that helps and remember 1% improvement per ride. over 3 months for 100% improvement.
