Ugh bad day at the barn, what to do?
Well...i just got a new rescue horse and shes an Arabian and she has..well..issues. Issues like abandonment/trust/weaving issues. Shes also VERY light and hates lunge whips. Today, I tried to lunge her, and she almost succeded in tearing my arm off, running over me (she runs around in TINY circles) and she WOULD NOT accept a bit. I don't know what to do and i just gave up, took the rope halter off, and yes, i cried because i got frustrated. I know, i need patience. But anyway, what can i do next time i see her to make it better?
oh, and all I want to do is ride my new horse, but i cant. Its REALLY frustrating.
Start her at the beginning of her training as though she has never worn a Saddle or bridle before. Get to be her friend, build up her trust in you. For a while just get her used to you, feed her, stroke her, groom her and talk to her. Is she hard to halter? Lead her around in the halter, talk or sing to her. Try some natural horsemanship games with her. Slowly start to teach her to lunge but not with a lunge whip- perhaps the end of the lunge rope as you should start small- does she even know how to lunge? Not all people consider lunging an important part of training a horse. Will she accept a dressage whip? If she does, you could tie a bit of baling twine to end of it and drag it on the ground so she gets used to it. I'd suggest you teach her voice commands, however this will take time, but when you lead her around the yard, tell her to walk on when you start to walk, and whoa when you stop. She should start to get the idea.
This can be a long process, I know, as a few years ago someone rode my arabian pony without my permission not long after he was broken in, and he is still upset about being saddled- I've finally gotten him over his fear of the bridle (sadly I am not a trainer and no one around me is a trainer who could help!), so I can't ride him at all.
However, don't expect her to trust you overnight, someone clearly has hurt her. It will take time, but one day when you are sitting on her back, you will be able to take pride in knowing that you did win her trust, and helped her overcome her fears.
With the bit, hold it in your hands and cover it with honey or mollasses, let her lick it clean. Teach her that it is not a scary object. Nexttry tying it to her halter so it sits loose in her mouth, allowing her to play with it, and make sure that the bit is a plain snaffle bit- you don't want to cause her any pain to would make her want to resist the bit.
I hope this is of some use to you. I wish the two of you the best of luck for a harmonious future together.
