What are the uses of different western bridles?
For a while now I've been wondering what the different types of bridles do and why are there different types. Such as One Eared Headstalls, Two Eared Headstalls, those without Brow bands, those with brow bands etc..I know that these are used in different events but the real reason i want to know is what exactly do they do? Does it affect the pressure around the Poll? How does it help in some events? Please keep it in simple terms...thanks.
Also if your ride with a bridle without the brow band does it affect the performance of the horse? Would you suggest riding without a brow band on a stubborn-sometimes-difficult-hard-to stop-while-running-horse?
The general purpose of all the headstalls is the same. Generally, they are there to hold the bit on just like English headstalls. Other than that the one-ear or brow-band are a preference. They both function to hold the top(poll area) of the headstall from sliding back, the opposite of the throat latch. You could argue that narrower leather puts more pressure on the poll, but I wouldn't say it makes a huge difference. It may be noticeable if you go from a 1 1/2 inch piece to a 1/4 in with metal pieces on it. So basically one ear pieces and brow band do the same thing as the throat latch and hold the headstall in place.
I wouldn't say it directly affects performance. Some horses don't like their ears messed with, but I don't think they care which style is used. I would not suggest riding any horse without a full headstall, let alone one that may be hard to stop which usually goes with a high held head, which would cause the headstall to slide toward the rider.
