english western saddle size exchange?
I am wanting to get a English saddle but i cant remember what the size exchange is like 16in in western is what size in English.
thanks
There is no "specific" exchange when going from one discipline to another.... but, generally, english saddles are 1-2 inches larger than westers... so if you ride in a 16" western you should START with 17 - 18" english saddles.
That said, different brands and models are all shaped slightly different and size is not the only factor to see if a saddle fits. Size is a measurement from the screw on the pommel (you will see on on each side of the pommel right up front) to the center of the cantle (back). A deep saddle will be slightly bigger (since the cantle is slightly higher) than a flat saddle... you also have to take into account the length of the flaps to be sure you can get your leg on the horse AND you knee can stay on the flap. Also, the tree size (which is the width of the saddle) has to fit your horse AND you... for example a big draft horse will need a WIDE tree, but (at only 5'2" and 115lbs) I feel VERY uncomfortable in a wide tree unless i get one with a narrow twist (the skinny part in the front of the seat, just behind the pommel)...
As you can see there are many different parts of a saddle that have to "fit" so you best bet is to go to a store and find a knowledgeable employee to help you and then just start sitting in as many saddles as possible until you find one you like.
