Whats better for competitive trail rides, western or english?
i have both but i'm not sure which i want to use. both are about the same weight, and fit me and my horse. the western is a trail Saddle although i have a barrel racing saddle i could also use. the english saddle is all-purpose.both are comfortable on long rides. which would you recomend and why?also, would you reccomend getting a leather breastcollar to go with it(to keep the saddle in place on hills?) thanks!
thanks so much for everyone who has already answered it's helped a lot! but i do have one more quick Q: i'm looking at this halter and bridle combined and the matching breastcollar(which would be a lot less hassle in my opinion) would nylon be okay? or does it rub on the horse?
An endurance saddle would actually be the best choice here… since they are built light weight and styled for comfort – for both the rider and the horse. If you are going to be a serious competitor in this type of event you should really consider saving for one, trust me you would appreciate it.
But since you have either a Western or English saddle for your choice at the moment, it really depends on your personal preference and the event you will be in. Is the event going to be very long? Are you going to need to take things with you on the trail or will they be provided? If you’re going to take things like water or supplies with you in saddle bags, are both saddles equipped for carrying what you need?
Do you already have a breast collar? If so and it is broken in, then definitely use it… it will help keep you in your saddle and the saddle on the horse while you’re going up down and around everywhere. If you don’t have a breast collar you should get one – neoprene lining would be a good idea because of all of the movement the horse will be doing. Don’t forget though that it would be a good idea to break it in as much as possible before the event so you don’t cause any rubbing or blistering.
And don’t forget about what the horse likes… does he/she have a preference of saddle and pad that they perform best with? That’s very important because they are going to be doing most of the manual labor during the competition.
