help with fitting a western saddle? im used to english saddles?
im thinking of buying my kids a western saddle off ebay as they are young and the horn will be useful for them to hold onto.
im confused as how to fit the western saddle. excuse me if i use the wrong names for things as im used to engish saddles.
ive seen some western saddles have rigging (girths) at the front of the saddle but some have two sets of rigging.
i assume if they have just one set of rigging at the front it fastens in place like a girth would on english riding.
but where does the back girth/rigging fasten?
has anyone got any links to photos i can see a western saddle fitted on a horse as i cant find any photos except of western saddles on their own which isnt helping much.
one other question is about the stirrups and leathers. do they alter in length like english ones do or are they set to one length and you have to keep them that way?
many thanks
Fitting: Where as in English you have narrow, medium, wide and extra wide trees, with Western, you have Full Quarter Horse, Semi QH and Arab type trees. Narrow to medium-wide a semi QH tree works fine on running QH and TB types.
As for rigging: There are several types of rigging for the front of the saddle. Dee rigging, which is a dee ring which is attached by leather to the saddle tree and rigged either closer to the horse's elbow or farther (I prefer 3/4 rigging), Then there's the drop down and the in skirt rigging which I'm not a fan of either.
The reason for the double rigging in Western saddles is that when you're dalling on the horn (Have a rope wrapped around it.) the back cinch keeps the saddle from rising up in the back when the calf/steer hits the end of the rope. The back or flank cinch is buckled on to the billets that come off the saddle. It is then connected to the front cinch via a small strap with a buckle to keep it from sliding back and "flanking" your horse.
Your fenders (That's the front of your stirrup leathers) are fastened in the back by a buckle generally referred to as a Blevin Buckle and you adjust the leather then pull the fender up or down in front accordingly.
I hope this explained it for you.
